At this point everyone has seen this tattoo that Mike Giant put on Dash Snow in 2000, right?

...but check out this new Vans shirt (you should click the image to see it larger)...

...I guess you can't really copywrite a tattoo, and inspiration can come from anywhere, but...

Man you guys can be ridiculous about this "art" shit. Did Mike Giant invent the Dia De Los Muertos skull style. When you copy a style of art you give up all claims of someone copying your art. I love Mikes' artwork but looking at modern tattoos and Vans skateboarding ads as artwork is a bit narrow minded right?
no, it's not narrow minded at all. but hey, thibk what you like. however that style of flowery-sculls shit has been huge over in oz lately, check out some of jono zawada's work for the preset's album for instance. my point is
a) inspiration could've come from way more than one avenue
and b) we all know the tatt is way way hotter than the t-shirt anyway.

I dont think the opinion on the shirt is about the style of work but more about the linework itself. There is a very good chance that the T Shirt was designed based strictly on this tattoo. There are obvious differences but I think its safe to say that this tattoo was the reference for the T design. What the moral implications of that are is really based on the viewer and Im sure we each have a our own very different and seperate opinions.
Oh and Mike Giant is The Dope in case you didnt know.
All you people have way too much time on your hands.
There is always time for discussion.
Do you as well have too much time on your hands?
You have commented on the commentators so I assume you spent an equal amount of time on the subject matter as the rest of the viewers if not more.
Maybe you have even more time than us? Lucky you!
Love
Mike
AVE is HOT!
that being said, my hat goes off to Vans for supporting a lot of artists nowadays like Sage Vaughn and Keren Richter (despite the ALife scandal of years back and now this...).
"All you people have way too much time on your hands."
You obviously have way too much time on your hands to pick out all those disgusting outfits.
i didn't invent the style and i didn't steal it either
its a sweet tatoo and a sweet t-shirt
its like playing your favorite song at home and then hearing it on the radio later
now he can have it on his chest and wear it on his back
I - Me - Mine
cry about it
yeah, i do have too much time on my hands. maybe thats the problem. but, when i see blatant shit like this, it gets under my skin. maybe vans got permission, who knows...its doubtful. big companies are always doing things like this to make more money. it isnt bad enough that now they have folks in china building chukka boots and slip ons. whatever. these are not the shoes i grew up with.
kudos to Ed for bringing up issues with Vans. I wish more skaters/artists/whoever would talk about it more and either end vans and other guilty like-minded brands or cause them to change their ways. there is absolutely NO PLACE for sweatshops and exploitation in skateboarding or punk rock or any other genre or clique that vans makes it's presence known.
leave that shit to Nike.
yeah, 3 skulls in a row, how original maybe he should patent this once in lifetime brainstorm. before this no one ever had the idea of 3 dia de los muertos skulls. the idea is ok, but no better than some mexican lady trying to make living with her drawings. what's the appeal of mike giant anyway? his art is good but not great. another case of who you know i guess.
brendan brought the tatt issue up not ed...does temps even write or post on here really?
