Geoff McFetridge at the Mu Museum in Eindhoven

That is in the Netherlands, or Holland for those with geographical challenges.
Geoff just had his first museum solo show. Super cool stuff.
Geoff is one of the raddest humans ever!

Now if I can just get him to do some Toy Machine graphics...

Peaceable Kingdom

A few days ago I arrived in Milan for Chris Johanson and Jo Jackson's exhibition "PEACEABLE KINGDOM" at Marella Gallery.

Christopher Garrett came with them to help set up the show and became the ultimate welcome wagon for my travel weary bones.

The bulk of the show are collaboration paintings by Chris and Jo. Sometimes colabs can be dicey, but these guys brought it home in a major way! Here they are signing the backs of the paintings before hanging the work on the wall.

Then serious discussions about "collaborative vision" were had...

An agreement is forged!! The show is hung!! Bravo!

A still from Jo Jackson's new video.

In the room next door, Chris' awesome geodesic mountain has been installed. It's traveled thousands of miles to get here and it still looks as incredible as ever!! And inside....

Video Drum Circle anyone???!!!! Beautiful.

If you're in Milan this summer come check out the show.

Genius is in the Mistakes

Yesterday, after a series of airport mix-ups, delayed planes and general headaches I found myself on an unexpected but furtuitous nine-hour layover in the city of Lisbon, Portugal.

As you can see in these photos there is some amazing 1950's-1960's architecture there. On the bus ride into town the road was seriously like a canyon of structures like this! Too many to shoot, but this should give you an idea of how it felt. Intense.

When you get to the center of the city, the modernism fades and you are smack in the middle of an antique village on the sea. The entire town is built on hills with tiny alleys leading to an ever complicating labrynth of shops and houses. The hand-painted signs were truly inspiring. I sat and drank coffee and watched people for hours.

So many buildings there had tile facades like this one below. Every corner was more beautiful than the last...so happy life didn't go according to my plan...it's a good lesson.

Just plain nice looking.

huge boy toy

A few years ago there was a lot of talk in LA of “tractor trailer truck/SUV/Ashton Kutcher/bigger-than-a-Hummer” vehicles hitting the market. (In hindsight I don’t remember the real Ashton tie in, but I think it was maybe just at that point where everyone wanted to diss him-And I heard from a very reliable source recently that he’s not even and asshole!) Ed’s uncle is a car dealer and was trying to sell him one, and I think I saw one of them once. But they never really hit.
Does anyone remember this?
I think this is one of them.

There is some change afoot at aNYthing, and you can tell by the fact that their groundbreaking site, www.aNYthing.com has been really seeming hurt lately. In particular, their GLOB has fully sucked... like, "what is this!?!?" levels being terrible...
As it turns out, its because A-Ron and DJ Free Simon (the masterminds) have been totally neglecting it (god knows who is updating it) and secretly working on a new GLOB, www.nyglob.com. It hasn't fully become public yet, but you can start checking it now... there are a ton of posts and it fully bangs as hard, or maybe even harder, than the old one at its bangingest... bookmarks now!

The Dark Cloud of Joy

Wait! By the looks of this photo, this should be some New York blog followed by shots of drunken hipsters at lit. Nope. Not this time. So who is this man and why is he here? This is Cali Dewitt, the mastermind behind Teenage Teardrops. He and I drove to bakersfield the other night to catch Morrissey from the second row center surrounded by the most excited Latino fans you could ever imagine. To see more photos of our night in the farmlands with the world's most infamous, melancholy, and aging Englishman click CALI'S BLOG here. Hell, you should be checking this thing on the daily anyway!

A few weeks ago John Waters, MEN (Johanna Fateman and JD Samson), Peaches, another band that I am totally blanking on and Terrence Koh performed at a benefit for Printed Matter in New York.
Terrence has gotten so much attention lately in the art medias and mainstream medias alike, but still his art is somewhat mysterious to most people (although one thing that we know is that the likes it that way). Below is some documentation of his performance from the Printed Matter event.

The light on the small stage is so incredibly hot. Every other light in the house is off.

Terrence walks out, painted completely white and wearing a giant white feathered robe.
He spends a few minutes with his head to the floor. The energy of the audience in the room, all excited to be there and to see him, respecting in rapt silence is truly powerful.

He performs an inaudible meditation involving his necklace.

He sheds the robe to reveal his tiny white-painted frame.

He leans over to open a what looks like a small plastered-over pot... Finally the pot is open... He takes the small spoon that he was using to break it open and spreads out one giant line of the white powder inside... whoah...

He snorts a third of the line, raises his head, convulses and looks up to the sky, repeating "Long live the printed idea. Long live the printed idea!" about four time. After which two boys in white clothes come to lead him, sort of trembling, away.

Treat Street!!

Woke up this morning with a smile on my face cause today was TREAT STREET!

If you don't know what Treat Street is, it's a secret bakery that sets up about once a month in different driveways and street corners in Los Angeles. They don't advertise...you have to follow pink arrow signs to get there and boy is it worth the hunt! All the stuff is totally homemade, like eating cookies a friend made. You can feel the love in every bite.

I rolled over with Mike Mills. Hung on the trees above him is a wide assortment of Treat Street merchandise...a cool new addition to the secret bakery scene!

They even have baby bibs!!

Thanks Treat Street. I felt the good vibes all day!!

YESS!
Its true!
Amidst all of the controversy surrounding children's television, Sesame Street's Mr. Snuffleupagus has taken off on the back of a truck to suburban MD. Andrea Longacre White caught this shot kind of paprazzi style, but as soon as the driving got eratic we backed off...
Whoah....

PDX Report

By chance I ended up in Portland today, so as soon as I could get it together I headed over to Mississippi Records. If you've never been to/heard of this place it's serously one of the best record stores I've ever been to (and when I say "record" I mean record). They ONLY sell vinyl...and GOOD vinyl. Like every record they have is seriously good!!

It's one of those places where you can just feel your bank account draining when you walk in the door.
Here's a short list of what I escaped with: Miklos Rozsa: Two Classic Film Scores (Brute Force & The Naked City), Times Square: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Black Bands 1927-1934, Charles Mingus: Tijuana Moods, The Specials: More Specials.

All of the above on big beautiful vuluptuous black vinyl!!!

Speedway Bitches Are The Best

I just got back from the Costa Mesa Speedway where I witnessed a true cultural event. Every Saturday night they hold motorcycle racing! Tonight was a big night...like the championships of the sport or something and the trashy troops were out in force. I even heard Megadeth was there, but I couldn't find them...everyone there looked like Megadeth.

It all happened because of an invitation from this man, Jeff Johnson of Choke Motorcycle Shop. He sent me an email that read as follows: "You should come to the speedway this saturday, speedway is 500cc single oval 1/4 mile races, one gear no front brake all jawa's mostly jawas some bsa's but all single 500cc, its high burning nitro night madness i think it would be good shit for you, you would write about it, nasty chicks, shaw, greasers, loud motors, hotdogs, beer, the need for speeed and true compitition, real love ya know, geary shit like build your own motors all winter, depressed racers living in milwakkee with no girlfriend> or wherever tuning their suspension-less bikes all year filing an extra oz. off their cam follower for the couple weeks mad races. its loud and you get dirt in your teeth and your clothes smell like nitrus for weeks!!!!"

How I could I refuse that?!! These are the bikes they ride. Crazy machines...beautiful actually. Loud as hell and the exhaust fumes make you want to puke, but still really exciting.

Travis and Nick were there too. We kept saying Nick looked like he worked there.

The final race...the bikes come around the bend...

...and zoom past you at CRAZY speed...and you DO actually get dirt in your teeth...and you seriously LOVE every minute!!

Rafaël Rozendaal is an incredible artist who makes work that can usually only be viewed on computers... please take 5 minutes to go to his site www.newrafael.com and play around... click past the first page and then turn the volume up on your computer and explore the links. It is really straightforward and each linked page is one piece, they are all interactive. And fucking AMAZING.

Buried Treasures-Part Two

Been digging in the storage for three days now. Yesterday I found my William Klein retrospective book. If you've never heard of William Klein, he's one of my favorite photographers. He's an amazing filmmaker too who made documentaries about Muhammad Ali, Little Richard and The Black Panthers. He's American, but really made his name in Paris in the 1950's and 1960's. His photos, which are often blurred or out of focus, his high-contrast prints, his use of high-grain film and wide angles shocked the established order of the photography world at the time and he earned a reputation as an "anti-photographer's" photographer. Here's a sample of some of his stuff...
