And just to back up a second to the subject of my livingroom—I mean, ANPQ's NY office—we had another very special guest for a few days a few weeks back in the form of i-D Magazine /The U.K.'s very own Jeremy Abbot! Jeremy is one of the most exciting writers writing today. He and i-D's editor, Ben Reardon, are fully championing and creating the craziest contemporary (and suuuper English) spoken-sounding writing styles... if you haven't picked up i-D lately, please check it out. You just have to read it.

This weekend NYArtBookFair

This weekend Printed Matter is hosting the 2nd (or is it third?) anual NY ArtBookFair, and along with a ton of other amazing vendors/publishers/exhibitors, ANPQuarterly is going to have a booth. (We are also having a special event on saturday from 5-7 with Ian Svenonius and Soiled Mattress and The Springs, but I'll give the details of that later).
The Fair is open to the public and FREE friday-sunday. It is going to be incredibly fun and inspiring... and potentially wallet draining...
From their site: "The annual fair of contemporary art books, art catalogues, artists' books, art periodicals, and 'zines offered for sale by over 120 international publishers, booksellers, and antiquarian dealers. Admission to the fair is FREE."
LOCATION: 548 West 22nd Street (10th & 11th Aves), NYC

Chris Johanson in My Livingroom - Part I

I just got this photo of Chris Johanson in my livingroom...

... with Raisin, right before they went to Vienna (with Jo Jackson) to install the art show.
...I'm sorry... I just couldn't resist.

Chris Johanson in Vienna - PART II

Just got these installation photos of Chris Johanson's recent show in Vienna.

Next level once again. Take notes.

Aaron came over to Browse some books...

I busted out the 3-D book with pictures of cacti that seem to pop out of the page like dicks. We were thinking Terry Richardson should do a 3-D book of peoples' boners.

It just so happens that Terry's father has a new book out of his groundbreaking fashion work.

Thursday Night!! Pat Graham/Silent Pictures Book Signing in LA!

If any of you happen to be in the Los Angeles area tomorrow night it is highly suggested that you attend the book release/signing party for Pat Graham's new photo book "Silent Pictures"
If you don't know who Pat is (aside from his contributing the incredible performance photos for the Ian Svenonious feature in ANPQ #8), he's a rock photographer extrordinaire, travelling with and documenting bands such as Modest Mouse, Bikini Kill, Fugazi, The Make Up, Lungfish, Smog, The Shins and many many more! And you know what? It's all in this book!! And...it's got one of the sickest covers we've seen in a long time.

Pat Graham/Silent Pictures
Book Release
Thurs, September 20, 7pm
Book Soup - 8818 Sunset Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA

If at all possible, go see Animal Collective play live.

I absolutely cannot co-sign it hard enough: if you are in one of the cities that Animal Collective are playing on their current tour, go see them. The ticket price is sort of high (about $20) but it is completely absolutely worth the price if you can afford it. (Or, if you fully cannot afford it, contact the club and tell them that you write for a magazine and get a press pass). Also, their new album, Strawberry Jam, is one of the greatest pop records ever made. This is not an exaggeration. Both the record and current live show demonstrate beautifully why Animal Collective are one of the most important teams of our time.

Barry Mcgee opening night shenanigans!

As you might expect, epicness.

Walking in you are confronted with this spectacular sight.

This bush grew a human arm and was doing graf during the show.
This piece was the one that made me laugh out load, it looked so rad.
At another erea in the show people were lined up with a 5 minute wait to climb up into a box Barry had built. When you got up in there, it was just a white cube with a motorized figure banging his head on the wall.
Exactly.
Genius.

In light of his new advanced, mature work, Barry showed up looking dapper with a shirt and tie.

Andrew J Wright was there all the way from Philly! And I saw Adam Wallacavage too. I also saw artist Manuel Ocampo, Directors Mike Mills and Miranda July, Artist Rob Clayton, Photographer Atiba Jefferson among hundreds of people mingling about.

RVCA Liz was there, trying to escape my watchful eye.

Barry himself was bombarded non-stop by well wishers, fans, graf kids, and autograph seekers. There was a special catalog/booklet made just for the show. Printed on newsprint, with a hand silkscreened cover. Everyone was getting that signed. I barely got to say hello to him!

Then some guy started fucking with him. Saying weird shit, like. 'I just want to be accepted into your world.' But really sarcastically. I think Barry was not in the mood for it and just WHAM! slapped the dude into a headlock!

It was crazy! Nobody knew what to do.
The guy was super embarrassed and just went limp.

It was super out of character for Barry to do this...

Finally, this dude in the white shirt came in to help.
It was all mellow afterward, security took the dude outside and everyone left to go eat. Great Night!

The Olympus Pen

When I was in Tokyo a few months ago I picked up an Olympus Pen half-frame camera. I had one of these about ten years ago, but lost it somewhere and I was so happy to find one again. If you don't know what a half-frame is, basically it's a camera that shoots two photos on each regular 35mm frame. You try to put together images that will look good juxtaposed against each other, but eventually you lose track and everything gets all jumbled up. I finally brought a bunch of rolls in to the lab recently and I thought I would share some of the results. If these are any indication, I foresee a half-frame revolution coming soon!!

www.mycymbal.com

There is a drum store in Memphis, Tn.—aptly named Memphis Drum Shop— that is so obsessively music nerded out (aka mega business savvy) that they created a site where you can listen to samples of every cymbal in their store and then mail order the real cymbal. They have a crazy amount, and they have been actually sampling and making a separate page for each one. www.mycymbal.com
I think the name is a play on myspace.com, right?
