Ari Marcopoulos in Los Angeles!!

Ari Marcopoulos, amazing photographer and friend of ANP Quarterly (He shot our next cover!) is having a show in LA this weekend. We highly suggest you attend. If you don't know about Ari, here's his bio...

Ari Marcopoulos (1957- , the Netherlands)
Photographer Ari Marcopoulos immerses himself completely in the individuals, personalities, visionaries, and scenes he has photographed. Originally from the Netherlands, Marcopoulos came to New York City in 1979 where he printed photographs for Andy Warhol. He immediately became involved in the art and music scenes of the time. His rarely published photographs of Jean-Michel Basquiat from this period are perhaps the most intimate photographs ever taken of the artist. A book of this work, Portraits from the Studio and the Street, was released in 1988. At this time Marcopoulos turned his attention to the growing hip-hop scene in New York City, becoming friendly with and photographing popular artists such as Fab 5 Freddy and Run-DMC. His photographs were used for the cover of the Beastie Boys album Ill Communication. "Out and About", a book of his work from the New York years was released in 2005 through Alleged Press. Ari Marcopoulos' new work continues his long term documentation of his own family offering an insight into a more private aspect of the artist's life. Like his compelling images of snowboarding, skateboarding, hip-hop and other groups operating outside the cultural mainstream, these new photographs evince an almost anthropological objectivity and thoroughness. Manifesting a sensibility more painterly than photographic, Marcopoulos' supersaturated images capture the unfamiliar or enigmatic in the everyday life of his subjects, creating the necessary detachment for viewing such intimate moments. Marcopoulos lives in Sonoma, California. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Interview and Blind Spot. He was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at PS1, Long Island City, New York.

whoah.

I was just about to post a blog when I saw Aaron's post below about V. Vale... and I am just pausing to say Whoah... ANPQ might owe more to him than to anyone.
A pause to say Whoah.
(and if you click
here , and scroll aalll
the way to the bottom,
there's an older post that
shows a copy of re:search
from the 80s...
stunner...)

A Little Hero Worship.

Last week I went to San Francisco to do a lecture at a fancy benefit dinner. When I walked in the room, everyone was in suits and I didn't know a soul. I was kind of nervous that it was gonna be a hard night, until I met this man in the photo with me above. If you don't recognize him, his name is V. Vale, and he's the genius impersario behind RE-SEARCH publications.

If you've never heard of Vale, here's a brief history: In 1977, while working at City Lights bookstore, with $100 donated by Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, he began publication of Search & Destroy, a San Francisco-based zine documenting the then-current punk subculture. In 1980, he began publication of RE/Search, a tabloid format zine focusing on various counterculture and underground topics. RE/Search soon grew from a tabloid format zine to a publisher of books. Vale published and contributed to many books on the subjects of pranks; obscure music and films; industrial culture; authors J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs; modern primitives; and many other undeground topics.

It was through the RE/Search books that, as a teenager, I was first introduced to things like Throbbing Gristle, William S. Burroughs, Survival Research Laboratories, along with tons of other artists, writers and bands that have helped to shape what I have become today. My copies of RE/Search from those days were literaly thrashed because I had read them over and over so many times. Meeting this guy was like somehow being introduced to a great teacher. A teacher whom I had never met, but who quite possibly may have been one of the biggest influences in my life. V. Vale is still publishing books and many of the old RE/Search and Search and Destroy magazines are still available from his RE/SEARCH PUBLICATIONS website.

Dave Hickey Rules!!

Art critic Dave Hickey recently gave a talk at the Frieze Art Fair about the current state of the art world. It's kind of long, but it's something that (in my opinion) each and every artist, especially if you're young, absolutely needs to hear. The man is a genius. Listen and learn. Click the link HERE to hear the speech.

Fun with glass and pixels...

Go see the Rape of Europa movie.

Y'All So Stupid.

If you're not familiar with our friend Devin Flynn's amazing animation work, here's a good primer. This is the latest episode of his animated series "Y'All So Stupid." There are three more posted as well if you follow the link. Here's the description of the show: "You know that feeling after you smoke a bunch of drugs? It feels like you're… um… really high? This is what that feeling looks like." Yup.

The Greatest Living American Artist

After a brief stop in Nashville, TN working on a secret project for ANPQ #9, I jetted over to NYC for the big ANP party at St. Marks Church. Well as you all know, that party never happened, so I found myself instead sitting in New York with absolutely no (justifiable) reason to be there. So...as the old saying goes, "I made lemons into lemonade" and ran uptown to check out the Richard Prince retrospective at the Guggenheim.

If your not familiar with Prince's work, I highly suggest you start your research now...cause if there's one living American artist working today that's worth knowing about it's this guy. First of all, the show is a total blockbuster (and not in the cheesy Hollywood movie style sense of the word)...it's just massive and beaming and touching and sad and punk and angry and dangerous and well, just damn exciting! It's the real deal folks, and in an art world that's more and more often fraught with fancy packages delivering empty promises, this show is most definitely a welcome relief.

To go into detail about the massive amount of works shown here would be futile, but let's just say the following subjects are covered: Jokes, Gangs, Monster Trucks, Muscle Cars, Bikers, Celebrities, Pulp Fiction, Heavy Metal, Politicians, Products, Protest, Cowboys, Girlfriends, Nurses, Barren Landscapes and the Industrial Wasteland to name a few.

Basically, it's America...in all its glorious excess and pitiful decay. It makes you love the place and feel sorry for it at the same time, yet left me inspired and alive and happy that art exists in this world. It's the real reason I ended up in New York. Thanks Richard, I needed that.

Richard Prince: Spiritual America” continues through Jan. 9th at the Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue, at 89th Street, NYC.

St Marks Church Cancelation Explained.

So, tonight was supposed to be our second St Marks Church event with A-Ron (“The Downtown Don,” formerly of-and-presently in court with his own brand, aNYthing… and now of his new brand Off Bowery) and Ethan Swan. The last one we threw was on July 3rd, and it was pretty much intended as a straight fundraiser for the historic church/art sanctuary (you know, where Patty Smith played her first show, and Andy Warhol screened his first film, Sam Shepard staged his first two plays, the Beat Poets were at home, etc…) and we raised $13,000, which paid for the Church’s front to be repaired and repainted. It was incredibly fun for the 2500+ people that came through during the events 9 or so hour duration, and it was pretty incredible how many people said that they had never been to anything like it in the time that they had lived in NY.
This event tonight was set up around the CMJ Music Festival, which is happening this week in New York, in which thousands of bands and music journalists and college radio djs and nerds and really anyone who can spend a few hundred dollars for a badge descend upon the city and go to any number of the literally hundredsof label showcase events that happen within a few days. The whole event relies on hype and stress, and the idea that there are a few “must see bands” who just became huge or are about to. Of course it is great to get to see so many great bands, but dealing with actually getting into the shows, for which you must either be a badge holder or one of the very few non-badge-holders that is allowed to purchase a very expensive ticket to the show can really be a nightmare. So we had this idea to pool together as many of our friends bands who were this years “big cmj draws” and some that should have been together and throw another party at the church. And have it only cost $5. And be all ages (a lot of the CMJ stuff is not all ages). And have really amazing vegan dosas for sale. And really cheap booze. And have it last for 12 hours… with a rave filling out the last 5 hours.
Our connection at the church, Father Frank, was really psyched. We were psyched. The bands were psyched, and we can only assume that the three thousand+ people that we were expecting were psyched… but two very important factions were not psyched.
There is a poetry society that has used a small-ish back room at the church for readings every Wednesday for the last 30 years. They hate outside sound and they hate other people being anywhere near the church when they are there. Apparently they even hate the church making lots of thousand of dollars. To be completely fair, we had planned to stop the live sound for the duration of their reading tonight and have a completely live music-less intermission from 8 to 10 pm while they read… but this was not good enough… and so it was that they contacted the church’s planner, who they in turn insured was very not-psyched on our event and who called me very late the night before last to tell me that our event, which we had been planning for months, which was in fact in the schedule, which was in fact going to raise several thousand more dollars for the church, was now CANCELED. Officially canceled.
A few hours were spent hoping and pleading, but in the end the poetry people shut us down.
On behalf on ANPQuarterly, A-Ron, and Ethan Swan, I would like to offer a huge heartfelt apology to anyone that went to the Church today, only to see a sign like the one below.
This event was going to be giant and exciting and inclusive and hopefully a lot of other great things… but… anyways…

What's all this about?

Here's a hint: It involves Nashville, tap dancing, Michael Jackson, and a pitchfork tattoo.

Benefit for Kime!!

Anyone who knows Kime Buzzelli, the wonderful artist and owner of the Show Pony boutique in Echo Park knows that she's a major force of good on the creative scene. Well, if you haven't heard she's got a tumor. But before you freak out, it's not Cancer, but as you can imagine, the price of getting it removed is massive!! Well next Thursday night is your chance to help out. There's gonna be a big benefit for her at The Echo. If you're in LA you best be there.

I had to do it...

A friend in England emailed me the link to this today... and I am sure it is some kind of viral phenomenon thing, and will be on — or has already been on — the Colbert Report (Colbert Report UK?)... but I have been thinking about it all day and cannot get it out of my head!

...and the description is so vague and nuts: "Real or set up? The camera as a voyeur in an extraordinary situation and level of intimacy." You can see the whole set up for yourself HERE.
Thank you Dom Tunon.

So so major.

Please excuse the title (I think they would have called it "The Man Who Sold The World" if they could have), but this movie, which just opened yesterday in a few cities (with more to come, and it will for sure be out on DVD soon) is fantastic and incredibly important. There is a quote in the film, which basically says that what Steve Rocco did in for skateboarding in the late '80s and early '90s was as influential to skateboarding—and, thus, popular contemporary western culture—as the Dogtown and Z-Boys situation of the late '70s, of which we have already had a major motion picture documentary and drama. And that's absolutely true. He changed everything. To try to rattle off the list of things he accomplished would be nuts, when this movie does it so well. Granted, it is a little bit over-stylized at points, making motion graphics out of board graphics that were effective enough without motion, but nonetheless it is absolutely a MUST see for anyone that cares about skateboarding, contemporary culture, pop culture, contemporary fashion or contemporary art. Seriously.
There is a trailer and further info HERE, and the screening information so far is below.

Do you think she is involved in computers?
The thing that's tricky, to me, is the presumption that it would be an "iDo" and not an "iDon't," like, he's asking the question and answering it, too. I guess its optimistic, right? It must be kinda gnarly: even though he is heavily breaded—I'm sure—he did still spend a lot of thousands on that billboard and all (its on Houston and West Broadway in Manhattan $$$$$$), so any subliminal help he can get would probably make the whole thing feel less crazy.
Team, what do you think?

Pinwheels in the Park

Anyone who visited the Swerve Festival last weekend might have seen these giant artist-created pinwheels we installed in Barnsdall park in Hollywood. They ended up being super hard to build and at times were unreliable in the wind, but in the end were really nice. This is a work in progress photo, but the artists involved were Mike Mills, Ed Templeton, Ashley Macomber, Geoff McFetridge, PAM, Matt Leines, Chris Johanson, Todd James, Terry Richardson and Thomas Campbell. They're down now, but we may be taking them on tour, so look out for them in a public park near you! Thanks to all the artists for being involved.

Xylor Jane this weekend at Jack Hanley, LA

For any of you that liked the Xylor Jane feature in ANPQ #7, if you're in the Los Angeles area this weekend you'll have a chance to see her work in the flesh. The opening is Saturday night at Jack Hanley in Chinatown.

Jack Hanley Gallery

Supersedure: New paintings by Xylor Jane
Video Installation by Nao Bustamante
October 6 –November 10, 2007
Opening reception: Saturday, October 6, 6-9pm

Xylor Janes’s paintings are built upon mathematical frameworks that employ many elements to form a whole. Jane then tediously fills these structures with dots or lines using arithmetic exercises, such as the Fibonacci sequence or alpha-numeric translations, that dictate color and mark making. Unpredictable patterns emerge from this logical sequencing and the sign of the hand contrasts austere mathematical structures. In beekeeping, supersedure is the process by which an old queen bee is replaced by a new queen that is younger and more vigorous. A honeybee colony can be thought of as a single organism because the social structure is complex, fixed, and the individual bees are simply cells of the organism. Xylor Jane’s paintings start at the cellular level and proliferate outward, radiating from the center, superseding the mathematical rigidity of the underlying system. Hive mind structure becomes the trance inducing form, subjugating the mean to the organism.

Xylor Jane lives and works in Holyoke, MA and San Francisco, CA. Xylor has recently exhibited a solo show at CANADA Gallery, New York, and in San Francisco at The LAB. She has been featured in the New York Times , Flash Art, The Village Voice and has contributed to publications such as LTTR and North Drive Press.

News from the frontlines of Art Books

In case you forgot to look at our website before or neglected to know, ANP Quarterly Magazine was having a table at the tremendous NY Art Book Fair this past weekend.
Here you see ANP's own Brendan Fowler along with talented photographer and enlisted help for the weekend, David Horvitz manning the ANP booth and holding it down.

It brought all the pervs/art book shoppers out. Collectors like photographer Ryan McGinley (below) and Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo came out like John Waters (Seen here with ANP's own Ed Templeton) on the first day to be sure to get the good shit before all the 'public' came in and got their grubby hands on it.

Downstairs was more 'official' and upstairs was a bit more 'DIY'

LTTR had a booth...

And here is Nick from Seems Books in San Francisco...

Even Australians came from down under to participate! As Shannon from They Shoot Homos Don't They? illustrates.
More posts from the Book Fair are forthcoming!!!
